CAF Referee Abandon AFCON Third Place Match After Being Denied Right to Officiate Final Match
Redouane Jiyed
Moroccan Referee, Redouane Jiyed, angrily flew out of Cote D'Ivoire before the kickoff of the third-place match between South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo, yesterday, Saturday, February 10th, 2024. The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has not commented on this development.

Redouane Jiyed was the Referee primarily assigned to officiate the third-place match before he disrupted the schedule by rejecting the offer.

Redouane Jiyed was reported to have banked on his right to officiate the final match between Nigeria and the host nation, Cote D'Ivoire, today, Sunday, February 11th, 2024.

The Round Table could not ascertain if Redouane Jiyed had already been scheduled to officiate the final match of Cote D'Ivoire 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, and later discovered unjustifiable substitution of his name, but it was clear he was assigned to officiate the third place match between South Africa and DR Congo, which he rejected.

South Africa won the third-place AFCON match against DR Congo yesterday on a 6-5 aggregate in penalty shootouts at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny stadium.

Nigeria will play against the host nation, Cote D'Ivoire, today in the AFCON final match at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpé by 21:00 (GMT+1).

Nigeria had played against Cote D'Ivoire about 28 times with each country winning 9 matches and 10 draws. However, Nigeria won 3 of the last five matches between the two nations and Cote D'Ivoire won 2.
