Several University of Benin students (UNIBEN) students have been trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.
An off-campus residential building, the institution’s PRO Benedicta Ehanire confirms, collapsed after a downpour.
The collapse occurred in the early hours of Saturday on Ekhator Street in Ekosodin.
Ekosodin is an area predominantly occupied by UNIBEN students.
It shares borders with the University of Benin.
A rescue team, it is understood, has been deployed to extract some students trapped under the rubble.
Sources reveal that several students were injured in the collapse, with some requiring hospitalisation.
At the time of this report, the university’s management has yet to state the total number of students affected by the incident.
In July, UNIBEN suspended academic activities on its campus following student protests over a power outage that lasted for weeks.
