Nyeson Wike
Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State have taken a serious decision towards delisting the membership of the former Governor of the State and the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and some of his allies from the party.
Recall that the former Governor of the state and the current FCT Minister, Wike, has been in an unfriendly political relationship with the Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara, who is traditionally believed to be the leader of the party in the state.
The Rivers State chapter of the PDP had commenced the revalidation exercise of members of the party across the 319 Wards in the state.
Recall that many political gladiators in the country have been wondering why it was hard for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to discipline Nyesom Wike for his decision to work against the interest of the party during the last election.
Nyesom Wike decided to work for the interest of Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the last election. This is against the ambition of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the PDP presidential candidate who lost the election to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the incumbent President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Nyesom Wike's decision to work against the PDP in the presidential election was due to a claim that the party had betrayed its tradition and principle of power rotation.
Besides, the political imbroglio between Wike and Governor Fubara has instigated some residents of the state against the FCT Minister, with many people calling for PDP to expel the former Governor.
The Round Table understands that the Governor Fubara-led PDP leadership in Rivers State may use the opportunity of the membership revalidation of PDP members to deny the FCT Minister access to the registration exercise which may eventually be used to expel him from the party.
Although it is expected that the membership revalidation exercise in Rivers State may lead to renewed political hostility in the state, it will cause a major crack within the structure of the party both at the state and national levels.
