Siminalayi Fubara
Two of the commissioners recently appointed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State to mann the activities of Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Prof. Simeon Emenike Weli and Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah have resigned their appointments amidst confusion in the administration of the state.

According to a resignation letter
dated Friday March 7th, which was addressed to the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Prof. Simeon Emenike Weli was until his resignation the Commissioner (1) in charge of Political Parties/Monitoring Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) while Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah was the Commissioner in charge of Budget/Research and Statistics in the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

Prof. Simeon, in his resignation letter cited the recent Supreme Court judgment which nullified the recent Local Government election conducted by the state for his resignation.

He said "In view of the situation in the Rivers Sate Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the recent Judgement of the Supreme Court which nullified the October 5th, 2024, Local Government Elections conducted by the Commission in Rivers State, I write to inform you of my decision to resign my appointment as the Commissioner I in the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission.

For Dr. Lazbery Nyebuchi Nnah, CNA, CILRM, CMC, CMS-London, the Supreme Court judgment and the emerging engagement between Rivers State House of Assembly and the State Government influenced his decision to tender his resignation letter as he prayed for a better future for the commission.

He said "Sequel to the recent judgement delivered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which annulled the 5th October, 2024 Local Government Council elections in Rivers State and the unfolding events in the Commission, I am compelled to resign my appointment as a Commissioner in the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC)."

"I pray for a better future for the Commission and thank the Commission for the privilege to serve in this capacity."

The Round Table recalls that the Supreme Court of Nigeria in her recent judgements, delivered that the Local Government election recently conducted by the RSIEC under the administration of Governor Mubarak was null and void while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) was ordered to withhold the monthly Local Government Allocation of the state until it has eligible local government administration in place.

In another judgement, Rt. Hon Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly members who are loyalists of former Governor Nyesom Wike of the State were declared valid, the house which had reportedly summoned the RSIEC twice in two days for attempt to conduct another local government election without following due process.
