G5 Governors Build up to the 2023 general election, the political atmosphere in the country was charged with political activities, events, and scenarios that could be described as immemorial. Among these political standpoints are the emergence of the "G5 Governors" in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the political struggles that followed the powerful pressure group.
Most interestingly, many political gladiators in the country would rise and ask questions about the possibility of achieving any gain by the G5 Governors, considerably when the vast majority of them are simultaneously contesting for political positions within the same political party they are battling.
Recall that "G5 Governors" includes Governors elected under the platform of the PDP in Oyo State, Seyi Makinde who was on the ballot for his second term reelection; River State Governor Nyesom Wike, who has anointed candidates on the ballots contesting various political position in the state; Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State were all on ballots for their senatorial ambitions.
Their Gains and Losses
Just like every other pursuit, there is a price for every transaction and the G5 governors must have paid for the mission that embarked on, although they have their rewards at hand.
Collectively, all of the G5 governors have their losses which include the loss of some Federal and state lawmakers' seats to other political parties in Rivers State which PDP could consider as a sure state to take it all. Also in Oyo State, lawmakers' seats at both federal and state were lost to another party, even with the PDP governor in the state. The situation is not different in Enugu, Abia, and Benue where in the last two states PDP also lose the governorship seats.
Nevertheless, the G5 Governors gained at maximum by extending their political relevance and forcing their party to bend for justice, which has formed the basics of picking a fight against the PDP by the group of governors.
Arguably, some of the G5 Governors gave open support for the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and with Tinubu's victory, we may be correct to argue that the political relevance of these governors remains alive.
Besides, the acceptance of the erstwhile National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu to step aside as the party chairman is a major gain for the G5 Governors because this has been the demand of the group and it has come to pass. This is a major gain for the G5 Governor.
Most importantly, the loss of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar at the last presidential election is the peak of the gain for the G5 Governors because of what they saw as injustice in the party, where the North had both the presidential ticket and National chairmanship seat of the party, was not allowed to survive by the G5 Governors.
