The National Working Committee (NWC) of the opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has formally joined the political crisis rocking its Rivers State chapter.
Recall that the Rivers State chapter of the PDP has been in a mess since a political rift broke out between the former Governor of the State and the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and the incumbent Governor of the State, Siminalayi Fubara.
The crisis has divided members of the state's House of Assembly as 25 of the 32 member-House of Assembly defected from PDP to All Progressives Congress (APC), in loyalty to Nyesom Wike while about seven lawmakers [one of them is late] lineup behind the State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Joining the issue, yesterday, after members of the party's NWC met in Abuja, it was resolved that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should pick a date to conduct a by-election to replace the 25 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who defected from PDP to APC, claiming that they have violated Section 109(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. The party has also vowed to take legal action against the defected lawmakers.
PDP's NWC, declaring the seats of the defected lawmakers vacant stated “That the Party communicates to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) by formally informing the Commission of the vacancies in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection of the 25 now former members, who by virtue of Section 109 (1)(g) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) vacated their seats by their action.
“That the Party officially demand that INEC should within the Constitutionally stipulated time, conduct fresh election in the 25 State Constituencies in Rivers State where vacancies now exist in the Rivers State House of Assembly as a result of the defection of the 25 now former members.
