Panic as Police Fire Shots To Disperse Residents Protesting Economic Hardships in Niger State
Protesters in Minna, Niger State
There is heightened tension in Minna, the capital city of Niger Niger as men of the Nigeria Police Force fired shots to disperse protesting residents of the state over the economic hardships facing the country.

Protesters, mostly residents of the Niger State capital, have trooped out en masse by 7 am on Monday to protest the rising cost of living in the country.

Amidst the protest, a group of women blocked Minna-Bida Road at the popular Kpakungu roundabout to express their grievances over the rising cost of food items. However, the protesting workers were later joined by men who jointly disrupted the free flow of traffic in the state capital city.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force attempted to peacefully restore normalcy to the area but the protesters refuted their efforts asking the police officer to leave. This forces the officers to release gunshots in the air to scare the protesters away.

One of the youths, Ibrahim Gana, said rice was sold at the cost of N2,000 per mudu at Minna markets while maize was N1,000 per measure.

“The Federal Government needs to take action to reduce the hardship being faced by the poor Nigerians. Things are becoming unbearable,” he said.
