Traders recounted their loss, yesterday, Wednesday, December 20th, 2023, after a fire gut down a port of the popular Nkpor Main market, Idemili North Local Government Area near Onitsha, the economic entry point to the Southeastern part of Nigeria.
The fire outbreak was said to have severely destroyed about 30 shops in the market before the market traders intensified efforts to extinguish it. It was stated that the fire had been put off before the arrival of the men of the Federal Fire Service.
Speaking on the cause of the inferno, the Chairman of the market, Paul Okafor, suggested the fire outbreak might have been caused by a power surge, considering that the fire outbreak started from a cold room shop in the market before it spread to neighboring shops in the early hours of Wednesday.
The Chairman of the market, while speaking with the journalists inside his office after the incident, said, “We call on the state and local governments and public-spirited individuals and groups to come to the aid of the affected traders to bounce back to business as soon as possible.
“Goods worth over N300 million were damaged in the inferno, and the traders are now counting their losses. This is not good for this yuletide.”
