Ghanian Manslaughter Case
Joseph Kwesi Effah, father of 11 and a member of the Akim Asuboa Neighborhood Watching Committee has been arrested and charged to court for manslaughter after shooting a man to death. He said he had mistaken his victim for an animal.

Prince Kwabena Kumi, the 36-year-old Aeronautic Engineer fell victim to Joseph Kwesi when he decided to visit his mum at Akim Asuboa not too far from Akim Oda in Ghana.

According to the Police Investigator, Mrs. Batse, the crime was committed in March 2018 but the accused has been denying involvement in the killing of Prince Kwabena until recently when he confessed that “he shot him by mistake, thinking it was an animal.”

Prince Kwabena who worked with Africa World Airlines in Accra, Ghanian capital city was said to have decided to travel down from Accra where he resides to Akim Asuboa to visit his mother, Comfort Nkansah Kumi. He traveled with his private Honda CRV car but decided to take his car to a carwash when he reached Akim Asuboa. He later joined some of the carwash attendants at a nearby liquor joint where he drank in a stupor.

The police once impounded his vehicle when he parked it in the middle of the road after he became stupidly intoxicated. The police then put him in a passenger bus heading towards Akim Oda and arranged for one trader, Benedicta Buruwaa, to meet with the deceased on arrival at Akim Oda to escort him to his mother’s place at Akim Asuboa.

The arrangement thereafter failed because Benedicta did not meet the deceased at the agreed drop-off point because he had been dropped before Benedicta got to the point.

On April 3, 2018, after days of searching for Prince Kwabena his lifeless body was discovered, decomposing in the bush along the Asuboa-Akroso road by the Police after receiving a complaint from Prince Kwabena’s family.

Upon investigation, the Police later arrested the accused for questioning because he was a member of the Akim Asuboa Neighborhood Watch Committee who was on duty in the area at about 10:00 p.m together with one Daniel Kwabena Akwaah.

Although the accused had previously denied the allegation but later confessed that he mistook the deceased for an animal after he heard a snoring sound from the nearby bush. He stated that the snoring sound resembled that of a pig and he decided to fire at the point the sound was coming from without caring to inspect before he shot. After the shooting, he later discovered that he shot at a human being whom he abandoned with no attempt to rescue him or inform the police.

An autopsy carried out on the remains of the late Prince Kwabena showed that the pellet collected from his body could be released by any of the three single-barrel guns retrieved from the accused and his neighborhood committee.

The case has been adjourned to November 16 for a pre-trial hearing before the trial Judge, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo.
