EU Leaders Leaders across the 27 nations in the European Union (EU) have resolved that military action has not shown the prospect of finding an end to the recurrent Israel-Palestinian war in Gaza. EU leaders are meeting for the second day in Brussels.
The 27-nation bloc believes that it supports Israel’s right to defend itself but Israel must respect International Law.
Speaking at the meeting, Irish Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar stated “The history of this conflict didn’t begin with the attacks on Oct. 7 and won’t end with a land war in Gaza. It’s very, very clear: 75 years of conflict between Israel and the Arabs, wars, terrorist attacks, and huge instability. This won’t end because of a military solution. It can’t.”
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also insisted that the resolution reached by the EU leader be implemented within six months.
EU leaders had earlier agreed they are “ready to contribute to reviving a political process on the basis of the two-state solution.”
The two-state solution approach to solving the Israel-Palestinian war was disclosed by the EU leaders to be the adoption of what the 27-nation bloc has been clamoring for years.
EU had tried to promote the idea of an Israeli and a Palestinian state with borders set mostly as they were in 1967 – before Israel captured and occupied the West Bank and Gaza – with some land swaps agreed between them.
With the two-state solution, the EU proposed both Israeli and Palestinian states would have Jerusalem as their shared capital.
At the EU leadership meeting on the Israel-Palestinian war, Austria, Germany, and Hungary stood staunch ground in support of Israeli military action, Spain and Ireland were more vocal in solid support for Palestinians but all the 27 countries agreed to the proposal “That there should be a two-state solution, and that we need to have a peace conference, and that the European Union needs to be part of that.”
All the 27 EU leaders agreed Israel cannot stop them from giving relief materials to the Palestinians but they will ensure none of their relief materials would be accessed by the Hamas.
Over 8,000 people have been reportedly killed in the war which has surpassed the number of deaths recorded (4,000) in the previous three times that the war had occurred between Israel and Palestine in the past at the Gaza Strip.
