Kaduna State Assembly Vows to Uncover ElRufai's Alleged Scandals

Kaduna State Assembly Vows to Uncover ElRufai
Nasir El'Rufai

Kaduna State House of Assembly has declared its intention to probe and prosecute the immediate former Governor of the state, Nasir El-Rufai, and some of his cabinet members.

The move was necessitated by the allegation of financial scandal during the administration of the former Governor. The House of Assembly, after concluding its investigation, agreed to prove former Governor El-Rufai and some of his cabinet members for allegedly diverting state funds including debt incurred in the name of the state.

Presenting the report during plenary on Wednesday, the chairman of the ad hoc committee, Henry Zacharia, said that most of the loans obtained under the El-Rufai’s administration were not used for the purpose for which they were obtained, while in some cases, due process was not followed in securing the loans.

Receiving the report, the Speaker of the Kaduna House of Assembly, Yusuf Liman, said that a total of N423 billion was siphoned by the El-Rufai administration while leaving the state with huge liabilities.

The committee, therefore, recommended the investigation and prosecution of El-Rufai, and some other indicted members of his cabinet by security and anti-corruption agencies for abuse of office through the award of contracts without due process, diversion of public funds, and money laundering as well as plaguing Kaduna State into heavy debt.

The committee also recommended the immediate suspension of the Kaduna State Commissioner of Finance, Shizer Badda, who also served in the same capacity under El-Rufai’s administration, as well as the chairman of the state universal basic education board.

It also recommended a thorough investigation of some key appointees of the last administration by appropriate law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies.

The committee set up by the Kaduna State House of Assembly was tasked with the assignment of examining loans, grants, and project implementation from 2015 to 2023 during which El-Rufai served as governor of the state.

Note: It is important to recall that the committee set up by the Kaduna State House of Assembly has carried out a thorough investigation on all the businesses of government during the eight years tenure of Nasir El-Rufai, and the report indicated foul play on the part of the former Governor. This left us with some questions that may need to be entertained.

Does the state House of Assembly have the power to probe a former Governor, recalling that the former Governor?

Recalling that a former Governor may decide to reject an invitation by the State House of Assembly, does the State House of Assembly have the power to declare him wanted to effect his probing?

What if El-Rufai is on top of all the political scenarios happening in Kaduna State, just to clean himself up in preparation for a future political gimmick?

Why can't the State House of Assembly directly petition the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), for the probe, if it means business?
