Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun popularly known as Wizkid signed a record deal with Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) in 2009. After the deal agreement, Wizkid after spending two years on the record label, released his debut studio album "Superstar" in 2011, which featured the hit single "Holla at Your Boy".

EME Record Label is a Nigerian record label founded by Olubankole Wellington who is popularly known as Banky W and Tunde Demuren in 2002. The label is home to several prominent Nigerian artists, including Banky W, Wizkid, Niyola, and Shaydee. EME Record Label has played a significant role in shaping the Nigerian music industry and launching the careers of many successful artists.

However, there were some misunderstandings between EME and Wizkid, about five years after signing a deal with the record label which forced Wizkid to leave the record label.

Banky W claimed Wizkid left EME Record Label without fulfilling his 5-album contract. He also stated that Wizkid's desire for control and a lack of communication led to his departure from the label in 2014, after the expiration of his five-year contract, although he had not been active with the label before this time.

Unfortunately, in an interview with Capital Xtra in October 2019, Wizkid put it on record that he left EME with zero naira and nothing more than his talent to start all over again despite spending five years with the record label, producing two records. However, it was clear that when Wizkid moved out of the E.M.E mansion in Lagos and acquired his own home in the Lekki Phase 1 area.

Interestingly, Wizkid still showed gratitude to Banky W for helping him in his career before the establishment of Starboy Entertainment, which is his record label in 2013. This is when the crisis was hot between Wizkid and EME.

A source claimed that the crisis between Wizkid and EME centred at money and it all started after the E.M.E All Stars concert in 2012.

Even though the crisis between Wizkid and EME started in 2012, it was turbulent in 2013 but there was a claim that there was reconciliation at a point which encouraged Wizkid to return to the record label briefly until his five-year contract finally expired in 2014.

However, Wizkid's breakthrough international recognition came after collaborating with Drake and Skepta on the hit single "One Dance" in 2016, which was released under OVO Sound, a label founded by Drake.

Wizkid later rose to become the first Nigerian artist to sell out the 02 Arena in London for three consecutive nights.

Ranking of Nigerian musicians based on their net worth has been skeptical for so many reasons, but it is unarguable, that Wizkid is today among the wealthiest singers in Nigeria.
