Benue State Governor Rev fr. Hyacinth Alia has set up two anti-graft commissions saddled with the responsibilities of probing the tenure of the immediate former Governor of the state, Samuel Ortom.
The two commissions which were inaugurated by Governor Alia, yesterday, were tasked with two separate responsibilities targeting only the administration of the Former Governor of the state, Samuel Ortom. The commissions were inaugurated on Monday, February 26th, 2024, at the Old Banquet Hall, Government House, Makurdi.
Even though the Governor claimed that the inaugurated Commission came alive because of his thirst to embark on a significant endeavor towards accountability and transparency, many residents of the state see the commissions as a vendetta move by Governor Alia.
One of the Commissions chaired by Hon. Justice Taiwo Taiwo (Rtd), is entrusted with the task of delving into the financial intricacies of the Benue State Government under the administration of former Governor Ortom, alone. Their ambit spans from May 29th, 2015, to May 28th, 2023, encompassing an exhaustive examination of income, expenditure, bank transactions, loans, waivers, special interventions, internally generated revenue, cases of misappropriation, contracts, wage bills, and the identification of ghost workers who were enlisted on the government payroll.
The second commission headed by Hon. Justice Apollos Paul Idi (Rtd), is tasked with scrutinizing the sale/lease of government assets, companies, and markets, both at the state and local government levels, spanning the same timeframe when former Governor Ortom was at the helm of affairs in the state. Their responsibilities encompass identifying properties, companies, and markets sold or leased, determining their correct value and status, assessing buyers/lessees, evaluating transaction values, ensuring compliance with due process, and identifying moribund state companies.
The first commission headed by Hon. Justice Taiwo Taiwo (Rtd) has Chief John AA Ochoga, Henry Tor, Tom Uja, Odeh Igbabe Nicke, Iorpenda Tanguhwar, Terfa Gbande, Government Counsel, Barr. Ajinge Saa as members; and Dr. Abraham Gberindyer as Secretary
Also, the second commission with Hon. Justice Apollos Paul Idi (Rtd) as Chairman has Clement Nenge Beetseh, John Oga, Hon. Terungwa Azende, Hon. Abraham Atotse, Victor Nyamtamen, Esq. as members; and John Edigbo as Secretary.
The commissions will venture into examining both the financial and infrastructural decisions taken by the Benue State Government under the administration of Samuel Ortom, and make recommendations as to what punishment could be awarded to the culprits.
