Flashback: Nigerian Super Eagles Mistakenly Beats Cameroonian Indomitable Lion
Nigeria vs Cameroon
Late Yesterday, Saturday, January 27th, 2024, the Nigeria National Senior Football Team (Men), Super Eagles, thrashed its Cameroonian counterpart, Indomitable Lion, out of the ongoing Ivory Coast 2023 African Cup of Nation, AFCON, at the round of 16 knockout stages.

Nigeria defeated Ivory Coast by two goals to nil at the AFCON round of 16 knockout match played yesterday. Despite the clean sheet recorded by Nigeria's Super Eagles in the match, some football fans, mostly, Cameroonians claim Nigeria mistakenly defeated the Indomitable Lion.

Although some Nigerians also shared the thought that Nigeria's Super Eagles have not been playing fantastic football since the beginning of the competition, however, standing records show that both the men's and women teams of Nigeria Football Team have been dominating football encounters with the Indomitable Lion and Indomitable Lioness of Cameroon since the Year 2000 edition of the African Cup of Nation.

Since AFCON 2000, Cameroon has not tasted victory against the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a competitive fixture.

Nigeria's Super Eagles eliminated Cameroonian Indomitable Lion with a 2-1 goal in the quarterfinals of AFCON 2004. Nigerian senior men's team also thrashed Cameroon 4-0 in 2018 World Cup qualifiers played in September 2017; held Cameroon to a 1-1 draw still in 2018 World Cup qualifiers, and ousted Cameroon from AFCON 2019 on a 3-2 scoreline in the Round of 16.

In the 2000 Women's AFCON, the Super Falcons of Nigeria inflicted a fatal 3-0 defeat on the Indomitable Lionesses that got the Cameroonians eliminated in the first round.

In the 2004 Women's AFCON, Perpetua Nkwocha scored 4 as Nigeria humiliated Cameroon 5-0 in the final.

In the 2006 Women's AFCON, Nigeria dished out another 5-0 spanking to Cameroon again, this time in the semis, with Perpetua Nkwocha netting another hattrick.

In the 2008 Women's AFCON, Nigeria haunted Cameroon again, beating the Indomitable Lionesses 5-4 on penalties in the third-place match.

In the 2010 Women's AFCON, Perpetua Nkwocha bagged yet another hat trick as Nigeria whacked Cameroon 5-1 in the semis.

In 2012 Women's AFCON Cameroon recovered some smiles as Enganamouit's lone goal gave Cameroon a 1-0 win over the Super Falcons in the third-place match.

However, in 2014, Nigeria returned to remind Cameroon who the boss is. Oshoala and Oparanozie scored as Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 in the final.

Women's AFCON 2016 will go down as the most painful for Cameroon. In the final in Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium, Oparanozie broke Cameroonian hearts with a goal that gave Nigeria the title.

In 2018 in Accra, Ghana, the Super Falcons again dunked on the Indomitable Lionesses eliminating them 4-2 on penalties in the semis, and when everyone thought the misery was over, Cameroon squared up with Nigeria in the quarterfinals of the 2022 Women's AFCON again and Rashidat Ajibade scored to give the Super Falcons victory.
