Gov Ahmad Aliyu Soko to It was another black Sunday yesterday, as some angry residents mobbed on a butcher who was identified as Usman Bida, and sent him to his early grave.
Usman was said to have engaged in religious arguments with denigrating remarks on the personality of Prophet Muhammad, the action which is said to have incurred the wrath of his fellows who descended on him and took his life.
Reacting to the disappointing development, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto and/or his Chief Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa in a statement released by the Office of the Chief Press Secretary showed that Governor Aliyu is in support of the jungle justice.
Although, one may want to exonerate Governor Aliyu because the section of the Press Released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bawa, quoted Governor Aliyu to have said "I want to call on the people of Sokoto State to avoid taking laws into their hands, instead, they report any alleged crime or blasphemy to the appropriate quarters for necessary action. Our religion does not encourage taking laws into one's hands, so let us try to be good followers of our religion."
However, in the same Press Release which was signed by Abubakar Bawa, it was categorically stated that Governor Aliyu valued the killing of Usman, even though without listening to what might have transpired at the scene of the argument that led to his death.
The Chief Press Secretary wrote as part of the Press Statement "The governor cautioned the people against any act capable of degrading the personality of Prophet Muhammad SAW especially in a State like Sokoto which is predominantly a Muslim dominated community. Dr. Aliyu said that Sokoto people have so much respect and regard for Prophet Muhammad SAW, hence the need for all the residents to respect, protect his dignity and personality.
This implies that it is either Governor Aliyu, despite being the Executive Governor of the State, the man who should lead by example in support of the religious killing or he has recruited a Chief Press Secretary who will enjoy the news of any Killing in the name of religion.
Jungle justice is condemnable everywhere in the world. The court is there for anyone who feels offended to vent their grievances. It is disappointing that an incumbent Governor would be bold enough to be taking sides with killers in such a regrettable incident.
This is condemnable and such ill-faith action should not be traceable to the Office of the Governor. Therefore, Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto may need to tender an unreserved apology for releasing a statement that directly put him against the Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
