Bola Ahmed Tinubu President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has implored some suspicious labour union members who are hiding under unionism to play partisan politics to wait till the 2027 general election season if they have the interest to take part in direct politics.
President Tinubu stated this, today Thursday, February 29, 2024, in Lagos while commissioning the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line project, a 37km project expected to reduce travel time and improve transportation and logistics in the state.
The President stated this, probably, reacting to the recent nationwide protests organized by the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero.
Recall that Joe Ajaero has been fingered in many political activities under the guise of labour unionism; one of the recent was his action in the last governorship election conducted in Imo State, and some other states under the control of All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajaero led some labour leaders and directed NLC members at the state levels across the country to proceed on nationwide protests against the economic policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Trade Union Congress, TUC, at a late hour to the commencement date of the protest, pulled out, with the claim that there was no reasonable justification for the protest.
NLC also called off the nationwide protests after it met rejections from some analysts on the first day of the protest.
Reacting to the NLC leadership style, while calling on Nigerians to embrace change and work towards national progress, President Tinubu encourages the labour union members who have an interest in politics to wait for the 2027 election season to fully put their ability to the test.
The president reaffirmed his administration's commitment to eradicating corruption and called on labour unions to refrain from disruptive actions.
He said, "Some labour unions should understand that no matter how we cling to our freedom and rights, to call for strikes within the first nine months of a new administration is unacceptable.
"If you want to directly participate in the electoral process, wait until 2027, if not, maintain the peace. Labour is not the only voice of Nigeria.
