Veteran anti-Islam populist and parliament member, Geert Wilders has emerged victorious in the astonishingly contested Dutch election. He ran on the platform of a right-wing political party, the Freedom Party (PVV).

Geert Wilders has been in the Netherlands’ parliament for 25 years, and his victory in the contest for the seat of the Prime Minister of the country has sent a strong signal to stakeholders in the country and the international communities.

Geert Wilders was in the election, contesting against the much-rooted nearest rival, a left-wing alliance, and he gained the support of the electorates after the ruling party fell against the Wills of the citizens who felt frustrated with the government’s kind heart towards migration of foreigners into the country.

Geert Wilders, 60, widely promised the citizens to revisit the country’s “migration rule” and place a ban on the Qur’an, the Islamic Holy Book. He also plans to hold a referendum for “Nexit”, pushing for the Netherlands to leave the European Union (EU) even though the Netherlands is one of the founding members of what now becomes the EU.

Speaking at a Party meeting after his amazing victory at the poll, Geert Wilders, vowed to keep to his promises with emphasis on “borders closure” and “banning the Qur’an”. He sounded prepared for taking harsh decisions as he was heard talking at the meeting “The PVV cannot longer be ignored…We want to govern and… we will govern. The seat numbers are an enormous compliment but an enormous responsibility too.”

Geert Wilders’s PVV won 37 seats ahead of its closest rival in the election, Frans Timmermans, who came distant second with 25 seats. However, he will need to work with other political parties in a coalition as he needs 76 seats in the 150-seat parliament. Even though the votes are still being counted, the remaining votes are less than 6% which may have no impact to truncate the wide-margin victory already recorded by the PVV.

Frans Timmermans has, however, vowed to stay away from Geert Wilder’s administration with a promise to defend Dutch Democracy and the rule of law. He said “We won’t let anyone in the Netherlands go. In the Netherlands everyone is equal.”

Other rivals in the election included third-placed VVD's new leader, Dilan Yesilgoz, and the leader of a newly formed whistleblower party, MP, Pieter Omtzigt who ended in fourth place.

Geert Wilders is against the rise in the number of people fleeing to the Netherlands from Ukraine due to Russia’s invasion and has pledged to deal with that. Over 220,000 people migrated into the Netherlands in 2022 alone, this was said to have resulted in a home shortage above 390,000.
