Bola Ahmed Tinubu The Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, has denounced the claim that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government is planning to recruit "area boys" as collectors of federal taxes from the residents.
Oyedele clarified while reacting to a trending story that claims the presidency is of the view to recruit "area boys" otherwise known as Touts to collect tax from the taxpayers.
Oyedele who spoke through his X handle, stated that the claim was a clear misrepresentation of his conversation in a recent interview he granted with the Channels Television. He said what he said on TV was the need for the Federal Government of Nigeria to promote the habit of tax harmonization and the elimination of multiple levies for ease of doing business.
He said he had never mentioned "recruit" or "employ" throughout his interview session with Channels TV on Saturday, January 27th, 2024.
He published on his X timeline, “The issue I addressed during my interview on Channels TV, which has been sensationalized and taken out of context, was how to get the buy-in of those who currently collect these taxes (and benefit from doing so beyond whatever they are being paid officially). I did not mention any words like recruit or employ”.
He further stated that what he said during an interview on Channels Television was taken out of context, noting that one “cannot recruit a person to do the job they are already doing”.
