The Nigeria Police Force, Federal Capital Territory Command, Abuja, has arrested 307 criminal suspects in a velvet operation conducted by the command late on Sunday night.
FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Benneth C. Igweh, led the officers to conduct a raid across all the areas marked as back spots by the police author authority.
The operation was informed by the recent rise in the level of insecurity in the FCT as kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery took the peak in the Federal Capital City of Nigeria.
The late Sunday night raid on some black spots in Abuja was conducted around Gidan Dambe in Dei-Dei -Zuba axis and 307 suspects were arrested by the police squad.
During the search, one English Pistol with fifteen (15) rounds of 9mm ammunition was recovered from one Ibrahim Tukur who claimed to be a DSS personnel. Other exhibits such as Motorcycles, wraps of marijuana, illicit substances, and valuables reasonably suspected to have been stolen from innocent residents were equally recovered by the police
A statement released by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that "While suspects are still undergoing screening, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth Igweh psc, mni, wishes to inform the members of the public of Operation Velvet, which was launched on 10/02/2024, comprising all the Tactical teams of the Command to curb all forms of vehicular criminality and other crimes in the Territory. The Commissioner of Police further cautions officers against extortion of residents and to adopt professionalism in the discharge of their lawful duties, as the security of the populace remains his utmost priority.
