Ifeanyi Ubah Four traditional rulers in Anambra State have withdrawn the chieftaincy titles earlier bestowed on the Senator
representing Anambra South Senatorial District, Ifeanyi Uba.
The traditional rulers decided on the recent suspension of one of them by the Government of the State under Governor Charles Soludo for violating a new code of conduct set by the state before a chieftaincy title could be given to any recipient in the state.
Governor Soludo had recently assented to a regulation stopping traditional rulers in the state from giving chieftaincy title to any recipient who does not hail from their jurisdiction without approval from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Giving an account of the traditional rulers who withdrew their chieftaincy titles from Senator Uba, the Anambra State government, in a statement, listed the traditional rulers including the traditional ruler of Aguluezechukwu in Aguata Local Government Area, Igwe F.E. Ebelendu; traditional ruler of Neni in Anaocha Local Government Area, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian and the traditional ruler of Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu.
The statement read, “It has come to the attention of Anambra State Government that Igwe F.E. Ebelendu of Aguluezechukwu in Aguata Local government Area, Igwe Onwuamaeze Damian Ezeani of Neni in Anaocha Local government area and Igwe Gerald Obunadike Mbamalu of Ojoto in Idemili South Local Government Area have respectively apologized to Anambra State Government and withdrawn and canceled the phantom chieftaincy titles conferred on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, as it contravenes the State Traditional Rulers’ law.
“This action by the three traditional rulers was in direct contravention of the State Traditional Rulers’ code, which outlines the rules and regulations regarding the granting and revocation of chieftaincy titles.
“Consequently, the titles of Ikemba Ojoto, Odenjiinji Neni, and Dike Eji Eje Ogu earlier bestowed on Senator Ifeanyi Ubah have been withdrawn and canceled by the three Igwes.
“This was contained in their respective letters of apology to the state government which also confirmed the withdrawal and cancellation of the chieftaincy titles which they variously described as nullity.
“However, it is instructive to note that traditional rulers are kindly advised to adhere strictly to the State Traditional laws and avoid any untoward actions that could contravene the provisions of the law.”
The Round Table recently reported that Anambra State Government suspended a traditional ruler in the state for conferring a chieftaincy title on Senator Uba without contacting the state government.
Also, it was learned that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is nursing ambition to contest for the Governorship seat of Anambra State during the 2025 Governorship Election in the state.
He has been elected into the National Assembly since 2019 under the platform of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and recently defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Hence, Ifeanyi Ubah is projected to be the main threat to the second-term ambition of Prof. Charles Soludo as the Executive Governor of Anambra State.
