3 Dead, Many Injured as Unknown Gunmen Shut Church During Christmas Mass

At least three worshipers were killed while many others sustained varying degrees of injury when hoodlums who were simply identified as unknown gunmen struck at a church in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State on Christmas Eve.

The Christmas Eve incident was said to be the first of its kind that the church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Nkweagu in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital, would experience

The unknown gunmen were said to have arrived at the church at about 11:30 pm during the Christmas vigil mass, killing three worshippers and injuring others.

The Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Most Rev. Peter Nworie, confirmed the incident on Monday.

He said, “This is the first time such an incident is happening in the Church and Ebonyi state in general,” the Bishop said.
