Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales has slammed the operation of X, formerly known as Twitter after it was taken over by Elon Musk. Wales condemned X’s activities saying it was being ‘overrun by trolls and lunatics’ when Musk took over the ownership of the microblogging platform.
Wales’ remark on the activities of X came in his response to a question on Musk’s offer to pay Wales $1 billion if he changes the name of Wikipedia to ‘Dickipedia.’
Wales also described Musk’s acquisition of Twitter at $44 billion as a huge problem. "It’s a huge problem," he said when he was asked a question related to the price of acquiring Twitter from its previous owner.
Speaking at the Web Summit tech conference in Lisbon, Wales told a CNBC correspondent at the summit “I think a lot of people are fleeing Twitter, a lot of thoughtful and serious people are fleeing Twitter. Twitter was, and now I guess X sort of is, in a way, the default public square for the world. And if it’s being overrun by trolls and lunatics, it’s not good for any of us.”
Remarkably, the misunderstanding between Elon Musk and Jimmy Wales started in 2022 when Musk alleged Wikipedia has “a non-trivial left-wing bias.” He accused Wikipedia of colluding with the previous management of Twitter in moderating content against the conservatives in the United States of America.
Responding to Elon Musk’s allegation that Wikipedia colluded with the previous management of Twitter to censor users, Wikipedia boss, Jimmy Wales states “What he refers to as censorship, we refer to as thoughtful editorial judgment, which is a very different matter. So, you know Elon will be Elon.”
Before Musk took over the ownership of Twitter, recall that former U.S.A President Donald Trump also alleged the platform of censorship; an allegation that forced him to set up his platform, TRUTH.
After Elon Musk’s takeover, Jimmy Wales also launched a sister platform to challenge X which was named “Trust Café,” a platform described as a “pilot project” with the aim of creating a “community of trustworthy people.”
Wales says his Trust Café won’t display ads but will run on people’s volunteers, and allow users to post X-style posts, comment, and search posts by topics.
