Variation In DSTV Subscription In Nigeria and South Africa

Variation In DSTV Subscription In Nigeria and South Africa
DSTV
On May 1st, 2024, the South African-owned digital television station, DSTV, commenced the implementation of its new price plan.

This increment is another in a series of price fluctuations within a year by the televising network.

No doubt, DSTV, is the best televising network provider in the country and it has no rival even close to it.

If there is any televising network close to DSTV, it is still its subsidiary, GoTV, which was set up by DSTV to entertain competition from smaller televising networks while its parent company, DSTV stays on top of the industry, unmatched.

This reality about DSTV monopoly had pushed many Nigerians against the company, believing the South African-owned company is taking advantage of its non-paternity with its Nigerian clients. Hence, it brings subscription costs that are considered too exorbitant for its Nigerian clients, anytime it wishes.

This has led many Nigerians to call on one another to boycott DSTV services.

Thankfully, DSTV is also operating in South Africa, so it could be easier to compare the plans and subscription charges in both Nigeria and South Africa. Then, we can discover if there is an exploitation or response to economic realities in the country.

Let's compare the prices of DSTV plans in South Africa and Nigeria

South Africa

1, DSTV Premium R929 ($49.36)

2, DSTV Compact plus R619 ($33)

3. DSTV Compact R469 ($25)

Nigeria

1. DSTV Premium 37,000 naira ($26.43)

2. DSTV Compact plus 25,000 naira ($17.89)

3. DSTV Compact 15,700 naira ($11.21)

Note:
Looking through the subscription plans and the charges in Nigeria and South Africa, even with the increased rate in Nigeria, the cost of subscribing to DSTV services in Nigeria is still far cheaper and almost 50 percent less than each of the plans could be accessed in South Africa.

Considerably, this might be a function of the high population rate in Nigeria which has arguably transmitted to high patronage of DSTV services in Nigeria compared to its South African custom base. However, the recent economic realities in Nigeria resulting in nationwide inflation across boards of goods and services including demand for salary increments by workers in both private and public sectors might have influenced DSTV to revisit its subscription plans in Nigeria.

Although everyone is free to choose what service he is willing to subscribe to, in fairness the recent hike in subscription plans of DSTV is a response to economic trends in Nigeria rather than targeted as being speculated by some residents.
