The Presidency has requested a probe of the federal civil servants, mostly, the administrative staff within the presidency to discover federal staff that may be working for the main opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP).
The call for the investigation of the federal civil servants may not be unconnected to the recent leakage of a document where the Secretary General of the Federation, Senator George Akume, got the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the disbursement of Five hundred million naira (N500,000,000.00) out of One billion naira (N1,000,000,000.00) voted for the inauguration of tripartite committee on the National Minimum Wage.
Leaked memo from the Presidency
The president believes such a vital document could have been leaked to the public by individuals it refers to as moles" who are loyal to the main opposition party , the PDP.
Nigerians have condemned the decision by the president to approve such a huge amount of money for the meeting of a few number of people, especially when residents of the country are finding it difficult to feed themselves as a result of the economic policies embarked on by President Tinubu's administration.
Economic hardships biting Nigerians are becoming severe and citizen have resorted to staging protests to register their inconvenience with the government's policies. However, the Federal Government of Nigeria had consistently encouraged the citizens to endure as the policies were declared necessary to save the country. Unfortunately, the citizens regarded the leaked memo as a failure on the part of the government to make the same sacrifice it encourages the citizens to pay for the economic reforms.
While speaking on the leaked memo, the Special to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described it as a "worrisome" development with the claim that it was not the first time such a vital document would be illegally released into the public domain.
Onanuga said: "What is worrisome is, how come a memo written by SGF to the President and bearing the President’s signature leaked out? It means that there are some fifth columnists within the government.
“It’s not the first time a memo will leak. There was a memo leak when the President went to UNGA, about a request for money to pay for his hotel bills and you wonder where it is leaking from.
“There are so many moles around who are probably doing the bid of the opposition. They are not respecting the civil service rule for handling official secrets. And it shows that the government should look inwards to probe how memos between officials are getting into the public space. Memos that are supposed to be secret are not supposed to be flying all over the place, Onanuga said.
