Nigerian fresh graduates who join one year of mandatory service for their fatherland under the scheme of the National Youths Service Corp may begin to earn twice their present monthly earnings, any moment from now.
This follows the recent approval of the N70,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The labour unions including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have expressed satisfaction with the agreed national minimum wage even though the labour unions have proposed for N250,000 minimum wage.
It is a tradition that NYSC corp members monthly earn a little above the agreed national minimum wage.
When the minimum wage was N18,000, the NYSC corp members received N19,800 monthly which was received to N32,000 the moment the national minimum wage was increased to N30,000 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Now that President Bola Tinubu has increased the minimum wage to N70,000, the NYSC corp members are expected to receive anything above N70,000, monthly.
The payment may commence immediately after the increased national minimum wage payment takes effect.
