Nigeria Lawmakers Take Decision on Bill Making Varsity Degree Mandatory for President, Governors
House of Representatives
Nigeria House of Representatives has dropped the bill requesting any citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria aspiring for the Office of the President or Office of the Governor of any of the Nigerian States to be at least a University degree holder.

A bill standing in the name of Hon. Adewunmi Onanuga had requested an amendment to the 1999 Constitution, asking for changes to the academic qualifications required by some political office holders, including Offices of the President, Governors, and other key elective offices in the country.

He said a university degree or its equivalent should be made compulsory for political office holders into some offices as against the current provision which allows a First School Leaving Certificate to be tendered by political aspirants contesting for political offices including the Office of the President.

The bill sponsored by Hon Onanuga of Ikenne/Salami/Remo North Federal Constituency, Ogun State, was stepped down by the leave of the House on Tuesday, February 13th, 2024.

The House of Representatives frustratedly went divided on the bill as the likes of the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, Babajimi Benson, Kingsley Chinda and a host of other lawmakers supported the bill; Aliyu Madaki, a lawmaker from Kano State, Ahmadu Jaha (APC, Borno) and some others debated heavily against the bill.

It was, however, stepped down with Hon Onanuga aiming to seek more support from his fellow honorable members and re-present the bill at a later date.

Hon. Onanuga who was not happy with the bill stepped down and said "It appears some of our colleagues need further lobbying. I will move to step down the bill for now.”
