Anambra State government has commenced demolition of houses and shanties that are considered illegal structures in the state. The operation which started in Onitsha, the business hub center of the state, has had some structures demolished for safety purposes.
Anambra State Joint Task Force on Illegal Structures states that many of the buildings in Onitsha pose a threat to public safety and are not in compliance with building codes and regulations.
The task force which was led by the Anambra State Physical Planning Board visited Omalima and Irunkwo Phase One and Two, Nkisi Layout, Onitsha where some illegal buildings and shanties were removed to ensure the safety of the dwellers of the area.
Clarifying the structures that were demolished by the task force, the task force team stated "The structures that were identified for demolition include shanties, makeshift shops, and unapproved buildings, and the state government had given notice to the owners of the illegal structures to vacate the premises but they refuse to comply.
Anambra State government vows to continue with the demolition operation which was well supervised by government officials, including the security operatives.
"We will continue the demolition exercise until all illegal structures are removed, and any further violation of building codes and regulations would be met with stiff penalties, including possible criminal charges," the state government stated.
Reacting to the exercise, the Chairman of the State Property Procurement Board, ANSPPB, Barr. Chike Maduekwe explained "That the Committee set up on government land recovery by the Governor was mandated to recover and restore the original master plan of the area by demolishing all the illegal structures built by the land grabbers within the area.
Speaking further, Barr. Maduekwe said "That it is not the intention of the government to punish people but insisted on carrying out the instructions of the Governor for the good of the people," a local radio station reported.
Barr. Madueke, however, added that the government will not pay compensation to any of the owners but that those whose structures were removed will bear the cost of the exercise as he encouraged the residents to stay away from violating the state's building codes and regulations.
