International Students France has joined the United Kingdom and Canada, placing restrictions on International students coming to the country.
The newly passed policy will stop Nigerians and other international students from traveling to France with their family members as dependents. Nigerians with the Japa methodology have utilized the system of traveling abroad with their family members as dependents to make it easier for mass exits to foreign lands where they seek greener pastures.
The new policy will specifically make it extremely difficult for migrants to move to France with their family members, and even if they go alone, it will delay their access to the welfare benefits of the French government, the main purpose for which the policy was formulated.
The severe aspect of the new policy in France is the provisional discrimination between citizens and immigrants, even if legal, as they won't have equal access to welfare benefits anymore.
Recall that, recently, the United Kingdom placed the same restrictions on International students, imposing a "no-dependant" policy on foreign students. The development has forced many Nigerian students who mostly look toward the United Kingdom to start looking elsewhere, including France.
Just in December 2023, the Canadian government reviewed its immigration policy, affecting Nigerian students.
As a result of the new Canadian immigration policy, starting from January 2024, international students must show new proof of funds, N16,050,000.0000 ($20,000), in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs.
The policy has placed more obstacles on many Nigerian students who find it difficult to meet the previous $10,000 proof of funds for international students.
Except for the waiver which lapses soon, international students have been compelled to not do more than 20 hours per week work cap. The waiver will expire in April 2024.
