Irates as EFCC Allegedly Demand Bribes In Dollar from Students
Nasarawa State University Keffi

Students of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi, have frowned at what was generally described as an act of extortion, as they accused the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of demanding bribes in dollars from some suspected internet fraudsters who are students of the institution.

Some operatives of the EFCC raided an off-campus luxurious lodge at the Angwan Lambu area of Keffi to effect the arrest of suspects involved in internet fraud on Saturday, June 15, 2024.

During the raid, about four students of the institution were arrested.

Reacting to the operation, the President of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, Comrade Buhari Ari Ibrahim, belittled the activities of the EFCC, claiming extortion and demand for bribes in dollars from the students.

“While we understand the operation aimed to tackle fraud, we are alarmed that the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC have also been accused of extorting students and demanding bribes in dollars”, Comrade Buhari Ari Ibrahim, president of the Students Union Government in the Nasarawa State University, Keffi(NSUK), has said.

Establishing the allegation leveled above in a letter addressed to the recently appointed and first female Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, Comrade Ibrahim stated the school management must “Ensure that the University’s security unit is informed and involved in any future operations on campus or outside the campus.

“Provide a safe and secure environment for students.

“Engage with the EFCC to establish a protocol for future collaborations that prevents extortion and harassment of students.

“Address the allegations of extortion and harassment of students by EFCC operatives and take appropriate measures to hold them accountable.

“We urge the management to take these concerns seriously and work towards creating a safe and secure environment for all students,” the letter added.

Meanwhile, some students and residents of the affected area have commended the anti-graft agency over the operation, lamenting that the activities of suspected internet fraudsters had led to the increase in prices of goods and services including House rents.

How true could the allegation of EFCC officials demanding bribes from students be backed?

Could it be the arrest made was selective, only affecting suspected internet Fraudsters who did not cooperate with the students?

What could be the financial background of the students parading the luxurious lodge (not convinced yet if the lodge in this context means hotel or hostel)?

But the report also stated that co-students who were possibly not into internet Fraud were happy because of the operation, citing intimidation and unnecessary inflation due to the frivolous lifestyle of the suspected students, could this mean the bombarded area is a reserved area for big boys on the campus, irrespective of their sources of income?
