How Igbo Politics Will Stop APC From Winning Anambra Guber Poll

Anambra 2025 Governorship Election
Ahead of the 2025 Governorship Election in Anambra State, political parties in the state are already putting together their strategies to ensure victory for their respective party during the forthcoming poll.

The peculiarity about the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship election is that three political parties will be out to strongly test their claims to supremacy in the State. The three political parties are already discussed in a separate article and they include the All Progressives Congress (APC), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Labour Party.

Deeply, in this article, we want to look at the reasons APC may not performed better than it has done in previous elections that were conducted in Anambra State focusing on Igbo politics.

Igbo Politics and APC: Anambra in Focus

Although what is constant is change until the change occurs, APC may continue to find it difficult to perform better in Anambra State, and nothing different is in sight ahead of the Anambra State 2025 Governorship Election.

Igbo politics has societal rejection for any political party that shares or believes in the political ideology of the Late Sage (Chief) Obafemi Awolowo, and this is the reason a progressive party is defunct in Igbo Land, and most especially Anambra State categorized as Yoruba party and such party continues to face rejection from the East with Anambra as its battlefield at all times.

The history of the rivalry could be dated back to 1967 when the majority of Igbo people believed the agitation for Biafra would have become successful and the agitators would have defeated Nigeria if not for an intervention from Late Chief Awolowo.

The intervention by Chief Awolowo had assisted the Nigerian military in capturing the Biafran army and logically sent the agitators back to the claves where the call of nature withdrew the weapon from them.

This scenario had remained unforgivable and painful for the Igbo nations, and it influenced the reason APGA was formed as Igbo's progressive party even though they knew that the Alliance for Democracy (AD) formed by pro-Awolowos was a progressive party that was already in existence.

Unfortunately, the tradition is worse to the extent that average people in Igbo Land, most especially in Anambra State, see the Igbo members of APC as aliens among them.

The same reason was responsible for the failure of Anambra people to cast their votes for APC during the 2021 Governorship Election in the state even though former President Muhammadu Buhari gave the entire Igbo nation and particularly Anambra State, a lifelong project, the Second Niger Bridge, that PDP had been promising them with nothing to show since 1999.

Recall that APC is an amalgamation of political parties including the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), a political party that was formed on the legacy of Later Chief Awolowo. With this, nothing different could be expected from Anambra 2025 since APC performance is concerned.

APC may have reliable resources to nurture the election but the most unfortunate for the party is the tradition that transfered anti-Awolowo's aggression on the party.
