Former Executive Chairman of Karu Local Government Council, Samuel Akala condemned the fatal stampede that reportedly claimed the lives of over 4 undergraduate students of the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) on Friday morning.

The stampede for palliative provided by the State Government to cushion the effect of subsidy removal in the country also left several other students critically injured and battling for life in the hospital.

Reacting to the incident in a condolence message made available to the journalists titled: “Black Friday In My Alma Mater”, Akala who governed Karu for 3 years demanded justice for the victims.

He lamented that they “died because the process of collection was mismanaged by Government officials who are supposed to protect your lives”.

“Rest in peace guys. You died for no offense. You died simply because you were invited to collect a small bag of rice.

“No Government Palliatives is worth the life of any citizen. The government must ensure that those involved in these wicked acts are brought to book and face the full wrath of the law.

“My heart goes out to the families of the affected,” the former Council Chairman, added.

Governor Abdullahi Sule had recently flagged off the distribution of 2 bags of 7.5kg rice and N5,000 each as palliative to students of the State in tertiary institutions.

The exercise which began on Monday, March 18 with students of the Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia was however marred by gross irregularities as many beneficiaries only received rice.

The exercise at the state-owned university, NSUK which houses the majority of the targeted beneficiaries scheduled for Friday, March 22 was also marred by irregularities which led to the fatal stampede.
