Flood of Rice Hit Rivers State as Wike, Fubara Share 80,000 Bags of Rice to Residents

The drainages were saturated as the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and his erstwhile political godfather, Nyesom Wike, took their political rivalry to the grassroots with the intent to gain more politicians and electorates to their folds.

Recall that Governor Fubara and his predecessor who is also currently a Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, engaged each other in a political topsy turvy that almost cost the Governor his seat except for the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who rolled out 8 point resolutions to bring the political imbroglio to a resting state.

Although the political atmosphere in Rivers is currently calm with every stakeholder in the state's politics carefully watching their actions to ensure they do not violate the resolutions agreed upon with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Hence, the restrained political warriors have now resolved into a kind of political cold war that is fought strategically.

Taking the political cold war to the streets, bags of rice flooded the streets of every community in Rivers State. It could be hard for a household in the state to claim a grain of political rice did not fall at the entrance of their house.

The Round Table learned that former Governor Nyesom Wike shared not less than 46,000 bags of rice with a strategic allocation of 2,000 bags of rice per each of the 23 Local Government Areas in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, there is no single Local Government Area in Rivers State that has not received at least 2,000 bags of rice branded with Nyesom Wike's tags.

Not succumbing to the political might of his erstwhile political godfather, Governor Fubara also went father Christmas with the disbursement of 31,900 bags of rice which is shared at the rate of 100 bags per wards.

As of today, January 5th, 2024, there is a ward in Rivers State that has not received at least 100 bags of rice carrying the tags of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Although the sharing formula adopted by Governor Fubara has received criticism, noticeably from the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the March 18 2023 general elections, Senator Magnus Abe who has now announced his return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abe condemned Governor Fubara for targeting only the members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) with his sharing template which targeted only the ward which will surely be delivered to PDP Leaders who are loyal to him.

Speaking on a local radio station, Abe said, “Let me criticize Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He sent rice; that rice should go beyond the PDP. It should not be for PDP alone. Give PDP, give APC, give SDP, and give everybody.

A source informed The Round Table that students unions, formal and informal workers civil society organizations, and community development associations were also targeted by the two sources from where rain of about 80,000 bags of rice fell on the residents of Rivers State.
