Wonder As Escaped Binance Executive Drags Ribadu and EFCC To Court

The arrested Binance Executives, Tigran Gambaryan and his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla who is currently on the run from state custody have dragged Nigeria's National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

The two Binance Executives were seeking the same relief challenging the respondents of abusing their fundamental human rights.

The detained Tigran Gambaryan filed his case on March 18 through his lawyer, Olujoke Aliyu, from Aluko and Oyebode Law Firm while Anjarwalla, the Binance Africa Regional Manager who escaped from lawful custody on March 22, filed a separate right enforcement suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/355/24 before the same Justice Inyang Ekwo.

According to a statement obtainable by the NAN, Gambaryan, a US citizen overseeing financial crime compliance at the crypto exchange platform, in his application, sought a declaration that his detention and seizure of his international travel passport contravened Section 35 (1) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (As Amended), claiming that his detention amounts to the violation of his rights to personal liberty.

Gambaryan asked Justice Ekwo to order the EFCC, NSA, and other security agents in the country to release him, return his International Passport, and restrain them from further detaining him or seizing his passport.

In a statement in support of the suit, Gambaryan said he is an American citizen who visited Nigeria in February along with fleeing Nadeem Anjarwalla, as a representative of Binance, to honor the invitation of the ONSA and EFCC to discuss issues relating to Binance in Nigeria but was later detained without telling him his offense.

He said he did not commit any offense during the meeting, and neither was he informed in writing of any offense he committed in Nigeria at any other time.

“The only reason for his detention is because the government is requesting information from Binance and making demands on the company,” he said, adding that he was not a member of the Board of Directors of Binance.

When the two suits were called on Thursday, T.J. Krukrubo, SAN, appeared for Anjarwalla and Gambaryan.

The lawyer, however, informed the court about the withdrawal of his representation for Anjarwalla. Although he did not give a reason for the withdrawal of his representation it might not be unconnected to the sudden disappearance of Anjarwalla from custody.

Justice Ekwo, however, adjourned the case until April 8 for mentioning, stating further that the respondent’s time to file their applications would expire next week Thursday.
