The Governor Who Is Digging Deep His Grave

The Governor Who Is Digging Deep His Grave
Siminalayi Fubara and Nyesom Wike

In politics, the admonition is never to dig deep any ditch for an enemy but the case in Rivers State seems to be antagonizing the says.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara seems to have started a political battle he may not finish as he declared the state's House of Assembly non-existent and proceeded to recognize a 3-man factional House of Assembly.

Rivers State House of Assembly is made up of 32 members, 27 of the 32-member House of Assembly have been showing their unrepentant loyalties to the former Governor of the state and erstwhile political godfather to Governor Fubara, Nyesom Wike.

Unfortunately for Governor Fubara one of the remaining five lawmakers is late while another one resigned to be home his Chief of Staff, leaving Governor Fubara with 3 supporters in a state House of Assembly of 32 members.

Governor Fubara is not a politician, otherwise, even if he was advised, he wouldn't have heeded as the constitution of the country does not allow a state to run without its state House of Assembly and there is no how 3 members form a majority in a house of 32 members. Even if something alike had happened in the past, with the current level of political awareness in the country, repeating such a character would be considered shameful.

Besides, an experienced Governor who knows he is not in control of the House of Assembly, and had a golden opportunity of the presidential peace deal which was broken between Governor Fubara and Wike, would have stuck to the deal.

Arguably, if not for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's intervention, Rivers State House of Assembly would have impeached Governor Fubara and nothing could have happened.

Listening to Governor Fubara's remark on the reason he accepted the peace deal broker by President Tinubu, one could simply see Governor Fubara as either being misled or inconsequential on his path to uncertainty.

Fubara said"I accepted that peace accord to give them a floating. That's the truth. There is nothing in that peace accord that is a constitutional issue. It is a political solution to a problem. I accepted it because there were people that were visiting me and we were together in my house. These are people that I have helped... in many ways when I wasn't even a governor. Yes, we might have our disagreements, but I believe that one day, we could also come together. That was the reason I did it.

Violating the President Tinubu-led peace deal is a request for free all space of political crisis between him and his predecessor in Rivers State.

Unfortunately, Governor Fubara may have the public sympathy because he is dealing with one of the most prominent politicians in the country, but the reality remains that he lacks weapons to settle the score in as much as a state Governor he couldn't lay claim to the simple majority in support from the members of his State House of Assembly, he might be considered fighting a lost battle.

Sooner or later, if the violation of the peace deal advances, no surprise if suddenly Governor Fubara is impeached by the 27 pro-Wike assembly members even though the three lawmakers who support Gov Fubara may want to operate a parallel legislative chamber but you know it won't stand.

3 out of 32 lawmakers can never be allowed to form a quorum.

Unfortunately, Governor Fubara needs to be tapped for awareness to convince many Nigerians of their agitation against the State Police.

If a state governor who was elected the same day as the state lawmakers can wake one day and declare the state assembly members sacked using the power it doesn't possess, it speaks negatively about what the state police will become in the hands of the state Governors, and Governor Fubara might be leading by not a good example.
