National Assembly Members of the National Assembly have commenced a move to stop any serving Governor of the Nigerian apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria, from taking part in active politics in Nigeria.
The moves to bar sitting Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria from partisan politics is contained in a bill titled “CBN (establishment) Amendment bill 2023" which was sponsored by Senator Steve Karimi, who was elected on that platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Kogi State.
The bill has been gaining attention from the general public with diversity on the possibility of the implementation of the bill if successfully turned into an act.
The bill was said to have been influenced by the parts played by the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele who is currently under detention by the Department of State Service (DSS) for various allegations including funding terrorism,
Recall that former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele was accused of nursing presidential ambition under the platform of APC, and when he failed to pick the ticket he resorted to the implementation of fiscal policy that brought hardship on the entire population, and eventually led to the death of many citizens. This was identified as a misuse of official power because of political ambition.
