Former Governor of Rivers State and immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has opened another can of worms alleging that Nigeria lacks a national leader per excellence.
Speaking at the 2023 edition of the TheNiche Annual Lecture themed “Why We Stride and Slip: Leadership, Nationalism, and the Nigerian Condition,” which was held on Thursday in Lagos, Amaechi recalled that all the major politicians in Nigeria ride on ethnic paternity to win an election.
He said, “Most times, we elect those who openly show that they are ethnic leaders and they are there for their ethnic group."
Amaechi recalled that Nigerian politicians often resort to inciting ethnic crises once they lose an election at the National level.
“Our political elites constantly run to their ethnic bases to provoke ethnic debate each time they fail to win advantages in their struggle for power and privilege at the national level," Amaechi stated.
However, with no regard to the incumbent President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the immediate past President of Nigeria, Amaechi disclosed that only the former President of the country, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is different.
He said: “The only person near that point of Nationalism, with all due respect, is ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo. The rest are ethnic leaders.
“Truly remarkable national leadership is the ability of a leader to galvanize the totality of a nation around the common national banner with a vision and a sense of mission.
“The truly remarkable national leader is the one who can rise above limitations to take the nation and its people to that place they long for but have never been before.
“It is a place of national greatness, pride, achievements, and shared goals, aspirations, and prosperity,” he added.
