Edo State Traditional Councils The Edo State Executive Council has suspended the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria at the state's local government level as the Executive Council approved rollback to the 1979 law which empowers traditional rulers in the state to oversee affairs of their domain.
To further empower the suspension of the 1999 Constitution, Edo State Executive Council has approved monthly payment of allocation to the traditional rulers in the state to enable them to deliver the tasks of their offices.
Rising from the State Executive Council meeting, the members approved Omo N'oba N'edo Uku Akpolokpolo, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II as the Permanent Chairman of the Edo State Traditional Councils of Obas and Chiefs, as well as the Permanent Chairman of the umbrella body of the council in Edo South Senatorial District.
Upon his recognition as the Permanent Chairman of the Edo State Traditional Councils of Obas and Chiefs, the state Exco has approved special and independent monthly allocations for the palace of Oba of Benin, while other traditional rulers also receive monthly allocations to run their offices.
Among others, some of the roles of the traditional rulers were gazetted to include social cohesion and peace, vigilance, and harmonious living among the people.
For funding, each of the traditional rulers may have to draft their annual budget for government, the template has not been rolled out, though.
