Asue Ighodalo Asue Ighodalo, the Edo State Governorship aspirant backed by the incumbent Governor Godwin Obaseki is polling to victory at the State's People's Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship Primary election.
Although final results have not been announced, results of other aspirants have been released and none had been able to gather enough votes to beat Ighodalo who has currently polled 455, still counting though, out of the 563 total delegate election.
However, before the conduct of the PDP main governorship primary, in Benin City, Edo State capital, where Ighodalo is polling to victory, a faction of the party in the state had announced the deputy governor of the state, Philip Shaibu, as the winner of the state's PDP ticket.
Political development like this is not strange to the country's political space, and its resolution is common.
The party will surely endorse and recognize the the candidate backed by Governor Obaseki for two reasons; the power of incumbency will be obeyed by the party's national hierarchy because it is the state governors who fund and sponsor the party's activities. Secondly, the governorship primary that produced Ighodalo was the one endorsed by the party's national leadership, irrespective of whether some members of the committee were present or attended any parallel primaries.

However, the chance of Shaibu holding on to his acclaimed victory is very narrow and well-known but it could be an opportunity for him to fly the governorship ticket or another party, Labour Party could be presumed here, and regardless of the party, what happened today within Edo State PDP chapter is an hint that the chances of the party to win the coming governorship election is very slim and anti-party activities could be the order of the days with the party as Edo matches to elect a new Governor.
Litigations against the authenticity of Ighodalo's governorship ticket will begin to fly, and the party may face more opposition from within than the opposing parties bearing in mind that the traditional PDP members in Edo State are not with the governor while Philip Shaibu is also taking away some members of PDP who followed them to the party about four years ago.
