Smugglers The Executive Governor of Adamawa State, Ahamadu Umaru Fintiri, has franked at people smuggling building materials from Nigeria to the neighboring countries, including Cameroon which shared a border with Adamawa State.
Governor Fintiri highlighted this in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, on Thursday, February 8th, 2024 while reacting to the hike in the cost of cement and other building materials across the country.
Governor Fintiri, who insisted that ferrying of building materials across the borders of Nigeria is a major factor that contributes to the hike in the price of building materials in Nigeria, banned the ferrying of building materials across border communities in Adamawa State to neighboring countries.
Recall that Adamawa State, which falls in the Northeastern part of Nigeria, is bordered on the southeast and east by Cameroon.
Governor Fintiri who has been convinced of his belief that those smuggling building materials from Nigeria to the neighboring countries are responsible for the sudden hike in price of building materials in Nigeria, therefore, "directed all security agencies operating in border communities to intensify surveillance and stop trucks from mass movement of all building materials to neighboring countries."
Governor Fintiri warned that the Government will not hesitate to impound vehicles conveying such items across the border and prosecute anybody found wanting.
He also expressed concern over the activities of the unpatriotic Nigerians and urged the public to assist security agencies in combating the menace.
Nigeria shares land borders with many West African sister nations but unlike the strict immigration policy at the borders down the southern parts of Nigeria, the borders shared with other countries across the northern divides of the country remain porous that there are free movements of goods and people between the border communities.
