To consolidate the over dependence on oil and improve the effect of climate change, the Federal Government of Nigeria has begun plans to create a bicycle-only lane in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.
This was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Mr. Olusade Adesola.
Mr. Adesola who was represented by the Director, Information and Communication FCT, Mr Muhammad Sule, in Abuja on Sunday at the opening of the 2023 World Bicycle Day stated that that bicycle-only tracks would be developed within Abuja metropolis.
Mr. Adesola claimed that the move to create bicycle tracks in Abuja will deepen the campaign to reduce the effect of climate change, emissions will be reduced if cycling is encouraged.
In his statement, Mr. Adesola recalled that as a people, we need to imbibe the culture of riding bicycles, both as sport, exercise and means of transportation. The benefits of cycling are enormous. It can improve heart health and strengthen the limbs.
If created, Abuja bicycle lanes would be the first in Nigeria and other state governments may decide to follow suit in their respective states.
