Kashim Shettima The Federal Government of Nigeria has resolved to set up a National Commodity Board to see to an end, the incessant hike in the prices of food items and essential commodities in the country.
The announcement was made among other measures taken by the Federal Government Committee, headed by Vice President Kashim Shettima, set up to see to an end the sudden rise in prices of food items and essential commodities in the markets.
Recall that in recent times, there have been lamentations and protests from the residents who find it difficult to meet end means following the astronomical increments in prices of food items and other essential commodities in the markets.
Rising from their final meeting, Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that the Federal Government of Nigeria has resolved on short-term strategies to tackle the rise in the cost of food items.
The Vice President listed the strategies to include revitalizing the food supply through specific interventions like the distribution of fertilizers and grains to farmers and households to counteract the effects of subsidy removal.
He also said the Federal Government will foster the collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources for efficient farmland irrigation to ensure year-round food production.
Vice President Shettima, however, said
to holistically address the price volatility in Nigerian markets, the Federal Government is ready to establish a National Commodity Board.
The National Commodity Board will be saddled with the responsibility to evaluate and control the cost of food items across Nigeria and manage a strategic reserve of essential grains and other vital food products aiming to maintain stable prices across Nigeria.
