A few days before the February 25th presidential election in Nigeria, the cloud is becoming clearer on the issues that may determine who wins the long-awaited poll as citizens prepare to exercise their civic rights.

Examining the political situation in the country, some factors may be critical to the determination of who becomes the next president of Nigeria, after the February 25th presidential elections in Nigeria. The factors are detailed below:

1) Cash

Like it or not, money has become bait in the throat of Nigerian democracy. Many electorates are now hooked to the habit of "no money, no vote; vote and prepare soup" syndrome.

Despite government effort to stop vote-buying political invasion, it is regrettable but without deceiving ourselves, any political party that can beat the Central Bank of Nigeria's new naira policy and provide cash to buy the electorates may have an edge in the 2023 presidential election.

2) Religion

Regrettably, despite the constitutional provision that religion should not be brought to the political terrain, religion will play a major role in the course of electing the next president of Nigeria.

Some candidates are already instigating many members of their religion against others, but the extent to which candidates can manipulate faith-based electorates will surely play a remarkable role in determining the next president of Nigeria.

3) Personal Influence

This is one of the major sociopolitical factors that will hugely shape the 2023 presidential election. The gesture of relationship between each of the presidential candidates and other political heavyweights, and the ordinary electorates will play a major role in determining the next president of Nigeria.

The goodwill of the presidential candidates to convince other candidates across levels, political heavyweights, opinion moulders and the majority of ordinary voters to swing their support toward his ambition would define the next person that becomes president of Nigeria.

4) Structure

Key to electoral success in Nigeria politics is a network of people who are key to canvassing for a candidate, or political party and stand, firmly, to secure their votes from any form of manipulation right from the polling units to the collation centre where a final winner would be announced. This presence must cut across every polling unit where an election is being considered.

The extent to which each of the political parties in the 2023 presidential contest has a political army to secure their votes across the polling units will, to a large view, determine who becomes the next president of Nigeria.
