Ikere-Ekiti Local Government Chairman in Ekiti State has the right to the reality that many people have been clamoring for since the return of democracy to Nigeria in 1999.
The local government boss was seen in a viral social media video clip taking an oath of office to his advisers and supervisors using Ogun, the god of Iron, and the Qur'an, Muslims' holy book.
The local government Chairman mandated all the appointees to swear to the god of Iron using cutlass as against the tradition of using the Qur'an and Bible in recent times.
The development has generated serious reactions from social media spaces as the actions were greeted with positive and negative reactions.
Many Yoruba people have regard for Ogun and it is usually used for oath when utmost trust, loyalty, and service are needed. Hence, people have been calling on elected officeholders to embrace using Ogun for their swearing-in service as exhibited by the Ikere-Ekiti Local Government Chairman.
Noticeably, the Advisers and Supervisors who were sworn in by the local government Chairman were asked to swear allegiance to the APC, its Ekiti leaders, the governor, and the deputy while invoking a deity.
Even though the fear of many people about using the Bible and the Qur'an for swearing service of political office holders is that the God of the Quran and Bible is considerate and even forgiving. However, it is believed that the god of Iron, Ogun, is spontaneous in wrath, and gives no second chance in dealing with anyone who deviates from the oath.
Despite the claim, it is still believed that men are just too powerful and can untie the oath immediately after it was taken, then the person who is believed to be under oath may perform woefully and go unpunished by the god of iron.
