In a dramatic display, the leadership of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared the Edo State Governorship Primary inconclusive. This is coming days after the party had announced a winner in the primary.

Rising from a meeting between APC executive leadership and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, stated that the leadership of APC decided to declare the Edo State Governorship Primary inconclusive because of the intrigues that followed the primary.

Recall that the primary election which was conducted on Saturday, February 17, 2024, had produced three parallel candidates for the party.

The Round Table recalls that the Chairman of the Electoral Committee who conducted the primary, Governor Hope Uzodimma, had announced Dennis Idahosa as the winner of the primary. A few hours after Uzodinma's announcement, the returning officer in the primary, Stanley Ugboaja, also went ahead to announce Monday Okpebholo as the winner of the same primary election.

A few days after the party already had two parallel candidates, Ojo Babatunde, who claimed to be representing the returning officers in all the Local Government Areas of Edo State also went ahead to declare Anamero Dekeri as the winner of the election.

Although Okpebholo and Dekeri emerged as parallel candidates, they did not have a Certificate of Return which could only be granted by the Election Committee Chairman, hence they wrote a petition to the party demanding their Certificate of Return.

However, another Governorship aspirant in the State, Prof Oserheimen Osunbor, had persistently claimed that there was no primary election conducted in the state.

Giving updates on the position of the party and when the inconclusive election would be finalized, Morka said “I am here to give you the outcome of the emergency meeting of the National Working Committee of our party held today regarding Edo State governorship primary election.

“At its emergency meeting held today, Tuesday, February 20, 2024, to consider the report on the Edo governorship primary election, the National Working Committee of our party deliberated and resolved that the governorship primary election has not been completed and has now fixed Thursday, February 22 for the completion of the APC Edo State” primary election process.”
