Olumide Akpata Despite the hype, the Labour Party (LP) has produced two parallel candidates for the Edo State Governorship Election.
Although the majority of Nigerians, especially the youths who are in search of a holy political party, view the Labour Party as the best alternative to the other political parties which have been densely populated by traditional politicians, the expectations of the people seem to be higher than the reality in the political agenda of the Labour Party.
Emerging from its primaries ahead of the Edo 2024 Governorship Election, the Labour Party has submitted the names of two parallel candidates as its Governorship candidate for the Edo 2024 election.
A former president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, was reported to have clinched the Labour Party (LP) ticket for the September 2024 governorship election in Edo State. Akpata was claimed to have scored 316 votes to win the exercise held in Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Friday.15. Hence, his name has been forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for recognition.
However, another faction of the party in the state has forwarded the name of Barr Anderson uwadiae Asemota to the INEC for recognition.
According to a letter obtainable by The Round Table, the Lamido Apapa faction of the Labour Party submitted Barr Anderson uwadiae Asemota as their governorship candidate and Barr. Monday Ojore Mawah was the Deputy Governor candidate for the Edo Governorship Election to the INEC, and the submission was acknowledged by the electoral umpire the same day on February 22, 2024.
Even though the court would be looked up to in determining the authenticity of the Labour Party candidate as claimed by both Barr Anderson uwadiae Asemota and Barr. Olumide Apata, it is a clear indication that the political culture and traditions of the party are nothing different from the political parties that members of the Labour Party condemn daily because of the heavy presence of traditional politicians in the parties.
