Rauf Aregbesola There is a trend of political sanction going on, currently, in Osun State as the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), decides to hit the nail on the head, suspending and expelling some members of the party who were found to be guilty of various degrees of anti-party activities leveled against them by other members of the party.
Until the time of filing this report, about 100 members of the Osun State chapter of the APC have either been suspended or expelled from the party.
This decision by the APC has erupted reactions from some members of the opposition parties, especially members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
Some PDP members were furious at APC for taking such a decision which aimed at keeping its house in order while the same members of APC clapped and danced for the likes of Nyesom Wike, Samuel Ortom, Seyi Makinde, Okezie Ikpeazu, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who led other PDP members to stage the same degree of anti-party activities against PDP during the last election.
However, taking a keen look at the decision being reached by the Osun State chapter of the APC, what suspended members of the party were accused of having done, could be distinctly differentiated from the allegation leveled against Nyesom Wike, Seyi Makinde and some other aggrieved members of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) who were accused of working against the interest of the party.
For those APC members who were suspended or expelled by the party, the action taken against them is considerably long overdue if they were to be PDP members.
The suspended members of APC were a set of individuals who, for no tangible reason, publicly identified with PDP, worked against the interest of APC, and used every medium to tarnish the image of the party and all candidates of the party during the 2022 governorship and 2023 deberá elections.
This same set of people formed a splinter group that operated a parallel faction of the party throughout the last elections held in the state with no alliance with the mainstream APC executive structure in the state or at any of the local government areas or ward level.
Besides, after the Osun State chapter of APC lost the 2022 and 2023 elections in the state, the same set of people regrouped into two, a set of them was engaged and appointed to PDP-led state government, while the other half of their faction intended to stay back in APC to keep frustrating the party.
No political party will be considered serious if such a set of people are allowed to strive and survive within the party with the latest degree of hostility from the faction.
Who will suspend Nyesom Wike in Rivers State? Who will expel Seyi Makinde of PDP in Oyo State? Likewise other aggrieved members of PDP.
Reacting to miscalculation or cheating in a political party is a civic right and does not amount to anti-party activity.
The same Seyi Makinde that you are comparing the hostile members of APC to, won his state for his party and only stood against injustice that later consumed PDP at the national level. Then, who will sieve out a successful Makinde? For what reason?
Likewise, Nyesom Wike not only retained his state for PDP, but he was bold enough to inform leaders of his party's intention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to nominate him as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Seyi Makinde has attended almost every meeting of the PDP that involves people of his cadre, and their disagreement with the PDP could be considered more of love and perseverance for the PDP, unlike the punished members of APC who have continuously involved themselves in anti-party activities against APC.
While Wike and his fellows prioritized Nigeria above their personalities, the sanctioned members of Osun State chapter of APC chose their personalities at the expense of the collective interest of their party. Nothing lesser than suspension and expulsion fit the recipients of the sanctions, respectively.
