Correctional center New statistics have emerged showing the male-female ratio of the composition of Nigerian prisons.
The statistics which was released by the Nigerian correctional center show that 98 percent of the convicted Nigerian inmates are Male while only 2 percent are female.
This shows that out of the 24,013 convicted inmates across the 253 correctional centers in Nigeria, 23,569 are male and the number of convicted females was 444.
The spokesperson for the service, Assistant Controller of Corrections (ACC) Abubakar Umar stated further that there are 78,849 inmates in Nigeria. This figure includes both the convicted inmates and those awaiting trial. The statistics reflect the status of the Nigeria Correctional Center as of December 18th, 2023.
Statistics show further that 69 percent of the inmates in Custodial Centres are awaiting trial while 31 percent are convicted inmates.
This record explicitly indicates that out of the 78,849 inmates in Nigeria, 53,836 representing 69 percent are awaiting trial while only 31 percent representing 24,013 inmates are convicted by court.
Among the challenges facing the Nigerian Correctional Center, according to Umar, was the dilapidated custodial structures which resulted in overcrowded and congested spaces within the centres.
The NCoS spokesman said the government had recently constructed 3,000 ultra-modern additional custodial facilities across the six geopolitical zones to decongest existing centers.
He said the initiative would help in decongesting the centers as well as enhance the welfare and the health of the inmates.
“That of Kano has been inaugurated and we are expecting speedy completion of the remaining facilities under construction.
“The ongoing construction of Abuja and the Port Harcourt centers had reached completion stages and they would soon be inaugurated,” he said.
