Oyo State government has cleared over 300 illegal structures surrounding public schools in the state. The action was taken in response to Governor Seyi Makinde's dissatisfaction with the state of the illegal structures surrounding the public schools in the state. The governor expressed his dissatisfaction when he paid an unscheduled night inspection to some of the public schools in the state, recently.
According to a Press Statement signed by the Honorable Commissioner for Information and Orientation in the state, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the exercise which was supervised by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola showed the government's commitment towards returning sanity to the public schools in Oyo State.
Arc. Mogbonjubola stated that the state government had served owners of shops, Shanties, and illegal structures causing obstructions and making the schools' environment not conducive with quit notice about two months ago. The Honorable Commissioner disclosed that the notice was directly served to the owners of the illegal structures and they all acknowledged it.
She, however, vowed that the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde will not rest until the public schools in the state are free of any structures that may make the premises not conducive for learning.
She said, "We would not rest on our oars until sanity is maintained...every student stands to learn better and maximize his/her potential, only if the learning environment is favorable...the present administration of His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde, will never look away from this reality".
A total of 359 Shanties, shops, and illegal structures surrounding 45 public schools were demolished by the government in Ibadan, today.
Some of the schools affected were located around Ode Aje, Orita Aperin, especially, IMG, Ode Aje; Islamic Primary and Secondary Schools; IMG Olubadan Basic Schools 1, 2, and 3, Orita Aperin; Government Technical College, Orita Aperin; Christ Church High school; United Mission College Demonstration School 1, Molete; IDC Basic School, Adobe; St. Stephen's Primary School, Alegongo; Community High School Alegongo.
Others were Issabatudeen Girls' Grammar School, Orita Basorun; St. Paul's Anglican Primary School, Yanbule; Methodist Grammar School Bodija; Emmanuel College, U.I, and a host of others.
The government warns that any of the owners of the illegal structures who dare the government and return to the environment will dance to the tune of the law. Arc. Mogbonjubola, however, eulogized shop owners who have voluntarily removed their shops following the early notice served on them.
The Honorable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola was accompanied to the site by the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Moradeyo Sunday, Directors and Environmental Health Officers.
