FG Handshakes Soludo as Erosion Cut-Off Onitsha-Owerri Expressway

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umuahi has commended the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo for drawing the attention of federal government to the gully erosion that is threatening to cut off Onitsha-Owerri Express road on the Oba axis of the road.

Senator Umahi arrived Anambra State yesterday to inspect ongoing federal projects, gave the commendation when he visited the gully erosion site today for an on-the spot assessment.

Senator Umahi who also commended Governor Soludo for his proactivity in awarding an erosion control work at the site to save road users from untold hardships, described the gully which has cut off one lane of the express road as a total disaster, promised that the Federal Government will collaborate with the Anambra State Government on the design to ensure that the quality of project meets the challenge.

The Minister recommended a complete pilling that will protect the two sides during the dry season or a complete filling with protection work throughout the environment, then break the two lane and takeout the ring culvert and make two bigger cell bus culverts to a point with an inspection chamber to connect the drainages that will terminate at the river.

Senator Umahi went on to promise that the federal government will do all it takes to assist the state government make the road motorable again.

He raised concern over fast spreading erosion on the road, predicting that with a continuous rain, the remaining lane might cave in within 10 to 15 days.

The Works Minister concluded his visit at the second Niger Bridge where he commended the contractor handling the project on the quality of work done while appealing to them to change the street lights on the road to solar energy.

On the issues of concessioning road construction work, the Works Minister explained that 12 roads have advanced on PPP model and revealed the federal government plans to building hotels, supermarkets, service stations, filling stations, packing areas and eateries that will be also be on PPP model.

He maintained that part of his agenda is to ensure that roads in the South East are built with concrete pavements and assured that with the support of citizens, the present administration will fix all roads.
