The reactions vary as many people welcome the development, and some people condemn it based on the fact that President Tinubu's decision to raise the worker's minimum wage cannot be perfected without setting up a tripartite committee of the Federal Government of Nigeria, Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.
The Round Table finds it interesting to clarify the subject of the variation in people's reactions to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's speech in commemoration of the 63rd anniversary of Nigerian Independence.
Going by the speech of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, there was no line or part of his speech where he raised or altered the minimum wage of the workers in the country.
What President Bola Tinubu said was not an increment in the minimum wage of workers but a declaration of cash palliative to the junior staff members in the Federal Civil Service.
He said "Based on our talks with labour, business, and other stakeholders, we are introducing a provisional wage increment to enhance the federal minimum wage without causing undue inflation. For the next six months, the average low-grade worker shall receive an additional Twenty-Five Thousand naira per month.
The minimum Wage of workers is not time-limited, and cannot be increased through a period of six months, and then revert to the old salary scale. Rather what the President has said could be regarded as a Conditional Cash Palliative for the junior staff members and not an increment in the minimum wage.
